The theoretical model that Casey, Kyle, and I made relates to me in many different ways. We all met at a convenient time to discuss what we believe should go on out model. After discussing what we believe are the key principles of a team, we created our theoretical model. The three main team characteristics were, team composition, teams goals, and team procedures. The three-team characteristics then break off in three or four sub characteristics that explain the main characteristic.
After creating the theoretical model with my peers, I realized that many of these characteristics are involved in many tasks and job positions. It doesn’t matter if it’s a part-time job, full-time job, or even a volunteer job. Almost every job has some sort of team tasks you will be engaged with. One of my first jobs I had, I worked in a retail store. At first, you wouldn’t think that teamwork would be necessary. I soon found out that teamwork is one of the most important things in succeeding in a retail store. I had to be able to communicate with my associates to ask question or even answer questions. Without teamwork, communication would be impossible. For an example, during the beginning of each semester at the bookstore, we hire 40+ additional employees to help with the rush of students buying textbooks and supplies. Myself being a lead worker, I have to communicate with the new employees on how to be successful at the job. If they have any questions about how to do certain task, I help them. This is where teamwork plays a key factor in retail.
Diversity has also played an important factor in my recent jobs. Diversity doesn’t only mean race, but also skills. I have worked with many different ethnicities that all have different skills in the work place. Everyone brings something unique and special to the organization. For an example, I received a job at a local restaurant. I had no experience in the restaurant business so my fellow employees where able to use their abilities to help me learn so I could perform highly when waiting on tables. All of these examples are leading back to team composition and how to perform well as a team.
In today’s workforce, having team goals is very important. You want to be able to set goals that will motivate you to become a more successful employee or team member. Setting goals that are hard to meet will make you a more determined person, which will help you in the workforce and it allow your manager or lead worker to see your determination towards a certain task. Being organized plays a significant role in being successful as team. Having documents organized will allow easy and quick access. There are also three different sub-characteristics that are linked to team roles. Having different task roles in a team is a valuable asset to a successful team. In order to be successful towards the roles you as a team member have to be responsible along with succeeding in the task. When having a member who isn’t responsible, it is very tough to succeed. For an example, my internship I am assigned to filing and organizing work reports for the company. As reports are finished, I put them in the correct file. This is an example of being organized, responsible, finishing my task roles, and also succeeding at my job.
Being apart of a team, it is essential to have team procedures. Team procedures can play a major role in a team. Keeping record, meeting deadlines, and communication are the three key tasks that need to be done for team procedures. An example that I have encountered with is that I have to meet certain deadlines for group projects such as this one. I had certain dates that I had to complete my information by. This allowed my team to be successful because I was contributing my information by the date it was due.
Overall, this project was very beneficial to me. Seeing in the future, I believe that this class and project will help me have a better grip on how to excel as a team. I now have the knowledge needed to lead a team to be successful. I have had many different types of group projects throughout high school and college, but this project will be the most beneficial to me later in life.
