In the article “What Makes High-Performance Teams Excel,” it talks about what key factors are in play for a team to excel to it’s full potential. In order for teams to excel at a higher level, teamwork plays a huge factor in it. When reading the article there was a statement that caught my eye. “Every member of a high-performance team possesses unique knowledge that contributes to the development and refinement of emerging technology.” (Daniel, Davis 41). An OB concept to fit this quote would be team diversity. Team diversity means that to a degree, team members are different from one another. They each can bring in something different to the team by their unique knowledge. In groups, their will always be someone who has more knowledge in a certain area than others. For a team to excel at a high level, they have to teach and learn from each other to make their group stronger.
In my opinion, I believe that every team or group should have an effective leader that takes control. In the article, it stated “Managers who lead high-performance teams in highly competitive industries must balance complex interpersonal relationships with corporate deadlines and quality stands.” (Daniel, Davis 40). I liked this quote because having deadlines for projects is extremely important because it makes the team stay on task and be motivated to finish it. An OB concept that fits this quote would be organizational structure. Organizational structure formally dictates how jobs and task are divided and coordinated between individuals and groups within the company. This quote could also be explained by the term role taking. Role taking means that the leader provides the employees with job expectations.
In the workforce, it is very important to produce newer items to keep up with other companies. “The high level of technological reiteration and redundancy places huge competitive pressures on industry players to produce the next generation of technological improvement.” (Daniel, Davis 41). Pressure is a great OB concept to explain this quote. Having pressure on someone will make him or her work harder to succeed his or her goals. Many companies are under a lot of pressure everyday. For an example, other companies such as PC manufactures pressures Apple to quickly come up with newer technology before PC does.
The article talks about the two key principles that guide team management and their successes. The first point the article brought up was “Communication and understanding of the team’s mission as a shared team agenda.” (Daniel, Davis 43). I strongly believe that there are two OB concepts that can relate to this principle. The first concept would be communication. Communication is the process by which information and meaning is transferred from one person to the other. In order to maintain a strong connection between a team, the team members have to have strong communication. The second key principle was “establishing structure, validation of each individual’s unique contributions and skills.” (Daniel, Davis 43). Formalization is a word that could help summarize this principle. Formalization is to the degree which rules and procedures are used to standardize decisions in the organization.
